Site Number: 1 of 2 Unclassified historic sites.
Site Description: Description: Site of A bowl barow, part of the group of barrows spread across Oakley Down (SU 01 NW 19). Listed by RCHME as Wimborne St Giles 119 and by Grinsell as Wimborne St Giles 3, it was described by RCHME as a mound circa 40 feet in diameter and 2 feet high. It has been cut on the northwest side by the A354. It was excavated in the early post-medieval by Cunnington and Hoare (their barrow 3). Hoare's description is as follows: "The apex of the barrow was covered with flints and other stones, to which we may owe the preservation of a very fine [collared urn]. It was placed with its mouth upwards, and covered a very perfect interment of burned bones". So pleased was Hoare with the collared urn that he used it for the frontispiece of his book. The urn is in Devizes Museum., Pentridge Hill, Dorset
