This sheet represents a coastal upland and estuary landscape, characterised by Bristol Channel, Bridgwater Bay, Levels margin, Quantock/Exmoor ridge and river-estuary crossings.

The primary archaeological theme is Bridgwater Bay estuary, Levels-margin, Quantock/Exmoor ridgeway and coastal harbour landscape. Enhanced prediction from Roman-road, ridgeway, hillfort/enclosure, villa/estate, road-convergence and river-crossing logic.

Sheet 20 shows a mixed area of coastal upland and estuary Bristol Channel, Bridgwater Bay, Levels margin, Quantock/Exmoor ridge and river-estuary crossings . The map is useful for studying early 19th Century historic settlement patterns, Roman road alignments, early archaeological site indentification, how roads, old tracks, lanes and paths, villages, waterways and field systems related to the wider nineteenth-century landscape.

Parrett / Bridgwater Estuary is interpreted as a estuarine port, river crossing and wetland-edge zone landscape. Quantock Hills Ridgeway is interpreted as a upland ridgeway and hillfort landscape landscape. Exmoor Fringe Upland Zone is interpreted as a prehistoric upland and pastoral route landscape landscape. Somerset Levels Margin is interpreted as a wetland-edge settlement and trackway landscape landscape.

Historic Routes, Crossings and Connections

Quantock-Exmoor coastal high route is interpreted as a prehistoric/Roman upland route corridor. Historic crossing points where roads, trackways or routeways converge on significant water features are widely recognised as archaeological hotspots. Crossing points often acted as gateways within the historic landscape. Because movement was channelled through these locations, archaeological evidence may occur both at the crossing itself and along the routes leading towards it, forming broader zones of archaeological potential rather than isolated sites.Parrett/Levels route corridor is interpreted as a river-estuary and wetland-edge route.
