Landscape and Archaeological Assessment

Landscape Classification

This sheet represents a chalk upland landscape, characterised by prehistoric monumental downland, dry valleys and forest/ridgeway landscape.

Archaeological Landscape

The primary archaeological theme is Wiltshire chalkland prehistoric monumental and ridgeway landscape. Enhanced prediction from Roman-road, ridgeway, hillfort/enclosure, villa/estate, road-convergence and river-crossing logic.

High Visibility Locations

Marlborough Downs Barrow and Ridgeway Belt

Terrain Archaeology

The terrain is interpreted using hachures. Relief is represented by hachures, allowing inference of ridgeways, high points, spur ends, valley approaches and likely route/crossing logic.

Main Geographic Information

Visible WILTSHIRE lettering across the upper sheet and partial HAMPSHIRE lettering in the lower sheet support placement west of Sheet XIII. The central chalk upland pattern is consistent with Salisbury Plain / Wiltshire downs. Bounds remain approximate because sheet-edge graticule labels are faint or not readable in the supplied image and no additional detail crop was available.

Main Landscape Features

Sheet 14 shows a mixed area of chalk upland prehistoric monumental downland, dry valleys and forest/ridgeway landscape . The map is useful for studying early 19th Century historic settlement patterns, Roman road alignments, early archaeological site indentification, how roads, old tracks, lanes and paths, villages, waterways and field systems related to the wider nineteenth-century landscape.

Archaeological Predictions

Archaeological Hotspots

Marlborough Downs Barrow and Ridgeway Belt is interpreted as a prehistoric high-route and funerary landscape landscape. Avebury Fringe Prediction Zone is interpreted as a prehistoric ceremonial and settlement landscape landscape. Kennet Valley Roman Estate Zone is interpreted as a Roman villa/estate and river crossing corridor landscape.

Historic Routes, Crossings and Connections

Marlborough Downs Ridgeway Corridor is interpreted as a prehistoric/Roman high-route corridor. Historic crossing points where roads, trackways or routeways converge on significant water features are widely recognised as archaeological hotspots. Crossing points often acted as gateways within the historic landscape. Because movement was channelled through these locations, archaeological evidence may occur both at the crossing itself and along the routes leading towards it, forming broader zones of archaeological potential rather than isolated sites.Kennet Valley / Marlborough corridor is interpreted as a river-valley Roman/medieval route.
