Landscape and Archaeological Assessment

Landscape Classification

This sheet represents a island maritime landscape landscape, characterised by chalk ridge, Solent harbours, coastal bays and estuarine crossings.

Archaeological Landscape

The primary archaeological theme is Solent maritime, island ridgeway and harbour landscape. Roman villas, prehistoric downs, beacon/lookout sites and naval harbour archaeology

High Visibility Locations

St Catherine's Down, Central Isle of Wight chalk ridge, Needles / West Wight cliffs

Terrain Archaeology

The terrain is interpreted using hachures. Hachures clearly define the island chalk ridge, high downs and coastal escarpments.

Main Geographic Information

Index grid places Sheet X west/south-west of Sheet IX. Visible Isle of Wight/Solent coastline, Hampshire label/terrain and the English Channel support the placement. Engraved detail confirms the Meridian of Dunnose at latitude 50°37?8? N and longitude 1°11?36? W, providing a reliable internal control point. Bounds remain approximate because sheet-edge graticule labels are faint.

Main Landscape Features

Sheet 10 shows a mixed area of island maritime landscape chalk ridge, Solent harbours, coastal bays and estuarine crossings . The map is useful for studying early 19th Century historic settlement patterns, Roman road alignments, early archaeological site indentification, how roads, old tracks, lanes and paths, villages, waterways and field systems related to the wider nineteenth-century landscape.

Historic Routes, Crossings and Connections

Isle of Wight Chalk Ridgeway is interpreted as a prehistoric/Roman/medieval island ridge route. Historic crossing points where roads, trackways or routeways converge on significant water features are widely recognised as archaeological hotspots. Crossing points often acted as gateways within the historic landscape. Because movement was channelled through these locations, archaeological evidence may occur both at the crossing itself and along the routes leading towards it, forming broader zones of archaeological potential rather than isolated sites.Solent Maritime Crossing Corridor is interpreted as a maritime ferry/harbour corridor.
