There are six ways to search for Archaeological Sites in England, Wales and Scotland:
- Postcode: Find sites within a certain distance from a postcode (eg AB43 6AF).
- Placename: Find sites within a certain distance from a particular town (eg Winchester).
- Around Farms: Find farms around particular places and which archaeological sites are near to those farms.

- Name of Site: Find sites known by a particular name (eg Camelot).
- Type of Site: Find sites particular generic type (eg Deserted Medieval Village).
You can also search for information on sites by their popular name (eg Camelot, Stonehenge, Maiden etc). Alternatively, you can search for sites of a particular type such as the 'Banjo Enclosures' in Hampshire or 'gold coins' found in Norfolk. Click HERE to go to the ARCHI search menu.
When you perform a search of the database, a list of results will be returned to you. To enable you to easily locate the site on the ground, the list contains the grid reference of the site together with links to an aerial photograph of the site, a link to a modern road map of the site's area and also a link to a 19th century map. Thus enabling you to view the site in terms of its geography, topology and history.
Source of the data held in the ARCHI database and search possibilities
The majority of the sites have been sourced from a variety of UK Archaeological Journals, books, reports and surveys. For a list of all the journal titles used in the construction of the database click here.
